12. NEPACS
NEPACS highlights the importance of welfare for prisoner’s families and enables us to understand that punishment impacts upon the families and children of prisoners. It was founded in 1882 as the Durham Discharged Prisoners Aid Society by a former Chaplain of Durham prison. The aim was to support men and women leaving Durham prison at a time when the probation service was newly emerging. The probation service eventually took over the society, organising caravan holidays, play projects and the visitors centre. Eventually forming the North Eastern Prison After Care Society (NEPACS). The organisation makes awards each year for innovative practice in promoting rehabilitation and the web site invites involvement “there are many ways in which you can help NEPACS to build bridges between prisoners, their families and the community. Together we can help prisoners and their families survive the sentence and create a better future for themselves.”
